Kristen Whittingham

Principal Child & Family Play Therapist & Consultant

Kristen is the founder of Play Plus Therapy and a registered psychotherapist with over 20 years of experience working with children. Her journey of working & learning from children has taken her through various roles; a nanny, child care & early learning centres, to years teaching in primary classrooms and school support roles. Today, she is passionate about supporting children and their families in the PLAYROOM, guiding their therapeutic journey.

Kristen has worked with children and families across various backgrounds and cultures, and is passionate about advocating for the rights of the child. In applying informed psychotherapeutic knowledge and working from a reflective standpoint, this ensures she works by meeting the child where they are at, an approach supporting the work as theirs.

She holds registration with Australasia Pacific Play Therapy Association (APPTA), the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA), American Psychological Association (APA) (International Affiliate) & Queensland College of Teachers (QCT).

Additionally, she is the first certified Learn To Play Practitioner in Australia, a modality for children aged 2 – 13 years who may present with a delay in pretend play skills, or have a neurodivergent diagnosis, which is also suited to her work as a Lego-Based Therapy Facilitator.

When not playing in the playroom, you will find Kristen enjoying a game of Uno Flip with her children, reading play therapy books, or at the dog park with her ever active dog named Luna.
